New mail and multiple tabs
How new messages appear without reloading, the "+N new" button, the counter in the tab title, the marker for unseen threads and working in several tabs.

You don't need to reload Faldro to see new mail. Every open mailbox tab keeps a connection to the server and gets a signal as soon as sync saves a new thread.
How quickly mail arrives
| Type of mailbox | When Faldro learns about a new message |
|---|---|
| IMAP with password login — Inbox folder | Right away: the server reports new messages itself (IMAP IDLE), usually within a few seconds. |
| Other folders of those mailboxes | At the next regular sync. |
| Gmail and Microsoft 365 connected via OAuth, POP3 | At the next regular sync. |
How often a regular sync runs depends on the mailbox's priority. The Sync button in the bar above the list fetches mail right away — for the selected account or all visible ones — and shows progress next to it.
What you see when a message arrives
In the thread list — the list refreshes itself and keeps your scroll position. New rows light up briefly. The counters in the left sidebar update along with the list.
When the list is "busy" — if you have threads selected, a menu open or the cursor in a text field, the list isn't swapped out from under you. A +N new button appears in the header instead, and the list refreshes once you're done. Clicking the button loads it straight away.
While you're reading a thread — the thread stays put, +N new appears in the header, and clicking it takes you back to the list with the new mail.
Background tab
While the Faldro tab isn't visible, nothing reloads; instead a counter of new threads appears at the start of the tab title, e.g. "(3)". When you return to the tab the counter disappears and the list loads once, with all the new mail.
Unseen threads
Threads that arrived while the tab was in the background, or while you were reading another thread, get a light background and a vertical bar in the accent colour. The marker fades by itself a few seconds after you're back on the list and move the mouse, scroll or press a key — that is, when you could actually see them. Opening the thread clears it too.
The marker is kept per tab: it survives a page reload and moving between folders, but doesn't carry over to other tabs or devices. It's not the same as "unread" — an unread thread stays bold until someone opens it.
Multiple tabs
You can have several tabs open at once, e.g. the Inbox and two threads (Ctrl+click opens a thread in a new tab). Each tab has its own connection and refreshes its own list. Closing a tab ends its connection.
If the connection drops (laptop asleep, network change), the tab reconnects by itself — first after a few seconds, then less and less often, at most once a minute. Once it's back it catches up on whatever arrived in the meantime.
What Faldro doesn't do
- No system notifications (pop-ups from your operating system) and no sounds.
- No email alerts about new mail.
To make sure nothing slips by, keep the Faldro tab open — the counter in its title is visible in the browser's tab bar.
When mail isn't arriving
If a mailbox's server stops responding or rejects the password, a banner above the list names the mailbox and the time of its last successful sync. Mail fetched earlier stays available. What to do: Help: mailbox isn't fetching new mail.
