What Google is switching off in Gmail, and who it affects

What's changing

Google is retiring two Gmail features that many businesses relied on to handle addresses outside Gmail:

• "Send as" — sending from Gmail with another domain's address (e.g. office@yourcompany.com) via that address's SMTP server,
• "Check mail from other accounts" — fetching mail from external mailboxes into Gmail via POP3.

After the deadline Google has announced (January 2027), addresses handled this way will stop being able to receive and send in Gmail. The mailboxes themselves, at the provider, keep working — only the way Gmail handled them disappears.

Does this affect you

Open Gmail → Settings → Accounts and Import. If the "Send mail as" section shows addresses from a domain other than Gmail, or the "Check mail from other accounts" section contains any accounts — yes, this affects you. Each of these addresses needs to be handled elsewhere before the deadline.

What to do

1. Write down the addresses from both sections. For each one, Gmail shows the server and login it used to connect.
2. Check the passwords. Gmail doesn't show them; if you don't remember one, set a new one in the address's provider panel.
3. Move the addresses to Faldro with the wizard: Gmail migration wizard. For each address you decide whether it should be a separate mailbox or just a sender identity.
4. Check your domains in Settings → Domains and deliverability (SPF/DKIM/DMARC), because mail now goes out from a different place than before.
5. Leave Gmail as it is until the deadline — both routes can run in parallel; nothing in Gmail needs to be switched off early.

What about mail already in Gmail

Faldro doesn't copy your Gmail archive — the wizard connects mailboxes at your providers, not your Google account. If you want your old messages in Faldro too, connect the Gmail account itself as another mailbox (with an app password) — then its archive will sync like any other mailbox.
