Folders and drag-and-drop

System folders and custom IMAP folders — creating, renaming and deleting them, and moving threads by dragging them onto a folder.

Updated 19.10.2026

The left sidebar has two kinds of folders: system folders in the Mailboxes section and each mailbox's custom folders in the Folders section.

System folders

Inbox, Sent, Bounces, Drafts, Scheduled, Spam and Trash are shared across the whole organisation — each shows threads from every connected mailbox at once. To see a single mailbox, click it in the Accounts section: the system folders narrow down to that account.

Folder What it shows
Inbox Incoming mail, minus archived and muted threads.
Sent Messages sent from the connected mailboxes.
Bounces Threads made up only of non-delivery notices.
Drafts Drafts saved in Faldro — see Drafts.
Scheduled Messages waiting to be sent — see Scheduled send.
Spam, Trash The mailboxes' matching folders on the server.

System folders can't be renamed or deleted. An empty folder shows "No messages in this folder.".

Custom folders

The Folders section shows the mailboxes' other folders from the IMAP server — whether you created them in Faldro, in your provider's webmail or in another client. When you're looking at all accounts, folders are grouped under each mailbox's address; once you pick one account, you only see its folders. The number next to a name is the thread count.

A folder appears in the list once it has messages in it. Clicking the Folders heading collapses or expands the section — your browser remembers this.

New folder

  1. Click + next to the Folders heading, or next to a mailbox's address (tooltip "Add folder in …").
  2. Type the Folder name.
  3. Click the tick button (Create).

The folder is created on that mailbox's mail server straight away, so you'll see it in other clients too. Faldro adapts the name to the server's convention (e.g. INBOX.Quotes for providers that store subfolders that way) — the sidebar just shows "Quotes".

The sidebar's folder list is built from fetched messages, so a freshly created, empty folder only appears there (and only becomes a drag-and-drop target) once the first message lands in it — moved there in your provider's webmail or another client, for example — and the mailbox has synced.

Renaming and deleting

  1. Click the pencil icon next to the Folders heading — edit mode turns on.
  2. Two icons appear next to every folder: Rename and Delete folder.
  3. Rename: edit the name and click the tick (Save) or the cross (Cancel).
  4. Delete: confirm the prompt "Delete folder "…" from the IMAP server? All N messages will be removed.".

Clicking the pencil again turns edit mode off. If you're viewing the folder you delete or rename, you're taken to the Inbox.

Deleting a folder removes it together with its messages on the mail server — this can't be undone. Move the messages you want to keep first. As a safeguard, Faldro refuses to delete a folder where the server holds far more messages than Faldro knows about (for example while the mailbox hasn't finished syncing).

Anyone with at least the "View + send" scope can create and rename folders; only the "All (including delete)" scope and admins can delete them.

Dragging a thread onto a folder

On a computer you can move a thread by dragging its row from the list onto a folder in the Folders section:

  1. Grab the thread's row with the mouse — it turns semi-transparent.
  2. Hover over a folder of the same mailbox — it gets a highlighted outline.
  3. Drop it. The row disappears from the list and the thread's messages are moved on the server into the chosen folder.

Rules:

  • You can only drop onto a folder of the same mailbox the thread belongs to — other accounts' folders don't light up.
  • Only custom folders are drop targets; to move to Spam or Trash, use the Spam and Delete buttons.
  • Dragging works from the thread list, not from an open thread.
  • Members with the "View only" scope can't drag.

If the move fails (say the server rejected it), a notice "Could not move:" with the reason appears in the corner of the screen, and the thread stays where it was.
